Laramie Woman dies in accident

A 24-year-old woman was killed in a one-vehicle accidnet on Interstate 29 about
15 miles north of Brookings, S.D., Tuesday February 14, 2006.

Elizabeth Ann Freitas was northbound on the interstate near mile marker 147 when she
lost control of her Saturn on black ice, Brookings County Sheriff's Department Sgt.
Steve Tietjen told The Brookings Register.

The vehicle entered the median, hit a bridge in the interstate's southbound lane, flipped,
was airborne and landed on its roof on County Road 40 guard rail, The Brookings Register reported.

The accident occurred at about 6:30am and was reported by a traveler on the interstate.
The woman was alone in her car and no other vehicles were involved in the accident
about a mile south of the county line. Tietjen said icy roads caused many other vehicles
in the area to slide into the ditch, and the ice created hazardous conditions for emergency
personnel working at the scene.

Assisting at the scene were the Brookings County Sheriff's Department,
the Brookings Fire Department, the South Dakota Highway Patrol and the Brookings County Highway
Department.
